Redcurrant
In the selection of varieties recommended for cultivation in allotment and home gardens, we have two early and three late-maturing varieties.. They are early varieties: Heros i Jonkheer of Tets.
Heros is a German variety. The bush grows poorly, yielding few shoots from the root neck, its habit is wide-spread, loose. It produces thin shoots, slightly branched, flabby, before lignification – green with a reddish tinge, older – gray-brown, with a slightly cracked skin. Medium-sized leaves, gray-green, 3-5–lapels with folded edges. Its advantage is very long clusters, big tasty fruit, evenly ripening (2-4 days after the fruits of the Jonkheer van Tets variety). The fruits are spherical, slightly flattened. Red fruit peel, Glossy, lines invisible, but the seeds show through the peel. Sweet and wine flesh, tasty. The fruits ripen from the second half of June. In warm positions, on fertile soils it gives up to 4 kg of fruit from the bush.
Jonkheer van Tets is the Dutch variety, the earliest of the cultivated in our country, fertile and disease resistant. The bush grows very strongly, yielding a lot of long shoots from the root collar, it has a spherical habit, flattened, in old age spreading, loose. Yellowish green shoots before lignification, with bright red streaks, rarely hairy at the tops, after lignification, gray, with a gray-brown skin, cracking. Leaves are small, Dark green, five-flap with folded edges. Its advantages are: high resistance to leaf fall, high fertility, very large fruit, nicely, cherry tinted, embedded in very long clusters. The flesh is quite sour, compact.
Dutch Red is a late maturing variety – in the second decade of July. The bush grows very strongly, issuing a lot of shoots from the root neck. Its habit is spherical, flattened. Before lignification, shoots are intensely red, with few glandular hairs in the apical part. Large leaves, Dark green, 5-flapper. Its advantage is very high frost resistance, plant resistance to leaf fall, and also fertility. Medium length bunches, black, large berries, spherical, jasnoczerwone. The fruits ripen 9-18 days later than the Heros variety. The flesh tastes quite spicy, Acidic.
Random is also a late variety, of Dutch origin. The bush grows strongly, its habit is raised, compact, inversely conical. Light green shoots before lignification, with faint red streaks, in the apical part with numerous glandular hairs, woody – covered with a yellowish-brown skin, quite strongly cracking and flaky ribbon-like. The advantage of this variety is high fertility, almost uniform maturation, easy fruit harvest, quite high resistance to leaf fall. It is especially useful for creating fertile forms, which are very suitable for allotment gardens, because of this, that they take up less space and their care is easier. This variety produces long clusters, Cylindrical, more compact. Thick cluster axis, mossy, bent at the root. Spherical fruits, medium size or large, of a light red color, Shiny, with poorly visible lighter veins. Sour pulp, unfortunately not very tasty.
The latest variety is the Macherauchs Rote Spatlese. It is a German variety characterized by high fertility and a very late ripening time. Its fruits ripen in 25-32 days after the Heros. The bush grows very strongly, its habit is irregular, spherical, flattened, loose. Before lignification, shoots are green with red streaks, and woody – Thick, ashen, o strong, ribbon-like scaly skin. Large leaves, 5-flapper, sometimes 3-flap, Thick, gray-green, strongly folded along the main nerve, sparsely distributed. The bunches are very long, Cylindrical, black. Thick cluster axis, strongly mossy, arched at the base. Spherical fruits, slightly elongated, pear-shaped, medium size, and small clusters in the apical part. Light red fruit skin. Large seeds, slightly translucent through the skin. Sour flesh, not tasty.
