Repair of a damaged window
Window repairs most often concern the replacement of glass and repair of the frame. The cracked glass can be temporarily secured by sticking transparent waterproof tape on both sides of the crack, sooner or later, however, it will have to be replaced. Do all glass work in thick gloves. If for some reason you have to put the glass aside, protect it from breakage by sticking a clearly visible cross from the masking tape.
Removal of broken glass
Before proceeding with glass removal, line the floor and the area under the window with newspapers, to be able to collect all the shards of glass later. Protect your hands and feet with gloves and shoes made of thick materials. It would be good to try to get safety glasses.
Start by removing all the larger pieces of glass. Be careful, because they can crack into smaller pieces under pressure. Then pull out or knock out smaller shards. If it is necessary to break the entire glass, tape it, so that it does not fall to pieces, and cover with a rag. You will extract the rest of the shards and putty with a knife, flat chisel or special glass knife. Pull out all the pins and hooks that fix the glass. Keep the hooks pulled out of the metal window frame and mark their position.
Putty removal
For removing leftovers with glass and old putty, a glass knife is best suited. Remember to wear thick gardening gloves. Start the profiled slats in the central part.
